I’ve never taken an online class before. How does it work?

If you are reading this post and can watch videos on vimeo.com, you can take our online classes!

Each class is a combination of professionally produced video lessons, written supportive material in the form of blog articles or PDFs, and interactions with the teacher and classmates via a closed Facebook group and/or private emails.

Once you sign up for a class, you will receive a welcome email within 24 hours. About five days before your class is set to go “live,” you will receive an email with the relevant urls and passcodes.

You will receive an email each lesson day reminding you that a video lesson is up and at the blog. In addition, you will receive prompt instructor feedback on all artwork uploaded to the dedicated class facebook group (or, if you prefer, emailed directly).

Video lessons are between 5-30 minutes, with the average lesson being about 13 minutes. Our video team works hard to make the videos as easy to watch as possible, which includes thoughtful editing so that you can spend more time with your art supplies. Each lesson typically demonstrates one or two new techniques and then provides an assignment for you to complete.

Students can opt to work in tandem with the group or solo; posting your lessons is entirely optional (though recommended to get the most benefit from the online community).

What is the difference between a “live” and a “self-study” online class?

One of the best things about workshops — both in-person and online — is the community created by like-minded individuals cheering you on, sharing ideas, and generally keeping you excited and motivated. During the “live” sessions of our online classes, this community is one of the biggest benefits.

Also in the “live” sessions the instructor is 100% ready and available to answer any questions and give feedback.

In self-study classes, you receive exactly the same content, though you work on your own schedule and simply need to email your instructor alerting him/her that you have uploaded your artwork since teachers don’t check the Facebook page regularly after the live session.

Both options are popular and it is just a matter of personal preference!

I will be away for part of the class. Can I still participate?

Of course! The lessons go up first thing each morning (usually at 12:05am PST) and it is up to each student when they would like to view the material. In addition, all the videos and class materials are available to you forever! (Except for year-long classes, where the material is available to you for one year from the last day of class.)

I live in New Zealand/Africa/Europe/South America/China/etc. Can I still participate?

Absolutely! The lessons go up the first thing each morning (usually at 12:05am U.S. Pacific Standard Time). When the lesson appears, you can work the material on your schedule. Instructors comment on artwork as it comes in, no matter where you live!

Can I share the links with my friends?

Your class fee is good for participants living in a single household. So, you can share with your kids, your partner, or anyone else living with you.

Other than the above, please don’t share the links with friends or family!

If you are part of a group and would like to request a group rate, please email me!

I haven’t drawn since the third grade. Are your classes suitable for beginners?

Yes, our classes are designed so that students of all levels find a warm, supportive, and challenging environment in which to learn and grow. In the rare case that a class is not suitable for beginners, it will be clearly stated.

How long do I have access to the class videos?

You have indefinite, lifetime access to our classes, so you can revisit the material anytime.

“Year-Long” classes have one-year access (though, all lessons are downloadable, so if you take the time to download the material you can enjoy forever access, too).
