Welcome
Hello Divers!
Welcome to Abstraction: Diving Deeper. Even though we are going to focus on finishing a painting in this class, the reason I called it “Diving Deeper” is because we aren’t going to rush to the finish. Instead, we’re going deep into the process of making a painting. My goal is to help you make that process your own.
Some of the things I’ll ask you to do in this class might seem uncomfortable and frustrating… you might think I’m nuts! (I won’t argue that point with you!!!) However, if you have the time watch this Ted Talk, it may help you understand what we’re going to do. This is a 15-minute talk, and you don’t really have to watch it… it’s enough to just listen. You may even play it while you paint or draw or fold laundry or whatever!
In case anyone missed this: one of the lessons in this class is to go to a museum or high-end art gallery and see abstract paintings in person. If you live in a rural area, or if this involves some scheduling for you, you can take that visit anytime during the class, even if it means going before the class begins! Just let me know if you plan to go early, and I will email the list of questions right to you. [email protected]
I am so looking forward to working with all of you! Thank you for signing up for this class. I look forward to next week!
Karine
Supplies
Here’s what you’ll need for this course:
- Watercolor, gouache, acrylic or oil paint. Your choice. I will be working in oil.
- Brushes, rags, palette knife and palette.
- Sketchbook, mixed media book or other small surfaces for sketches or smaller studies
- Charcoal, watercolor, pencils, pastels or other favorite media for smaller studies (your preference)
- Collage materials (if desired)
- Small notebook and pencil for notes
- 3 to 5 painting surfaces for finished paintings
- If you’re painting with watercolors, then buy good size, 100% rag paper, 140 lb. or greater. 16″x20″ inches or larger. We’ll be spending time on each piece, so invest some money in your surface. You’ll be glad you did.
- If you’re painting with acrylic or oil, then buy either stretched canvas (you can stretch your own), or good quality wood panel painting surfaces. At least 16″x20″ inches, if not larger. Primed or you can prime yourself. They need to be ready to accept paint.
You may know already how fast you paint (or how slowly). This is a two-week class. In these lessons you’ll start at least two paintings. If you have been putting off working on a large painting, but want to try it, this is your chance!!! You can even spend the entire two weeks on one painting, if you wish.
Make time during the next two weeks to visit an art museum or art gallery. This is the assignment for Lesson 3—to see abstract paintings somewhere IN PERSON. If you live in a rural area, you may have to travel to do this. If this will be difficult for you, looking at a book of your favorite abstract painter or an online search for a favorite painter will suffice. However, I hope that at some point during the next 6 months you make time to see original abstract paintings in person. It’s a valuable and worthwhile experience.
Nuts & Bolts
Here’s how this online class works:
- As a self-study class, so you have access to all of the lessons right now and can work the lessons on your own timetable.
- You have indefinite access to this class.
- You can (optionally) share your work with Karine via email or via the class Facebook page. Since this is now a self-study class, you will need to let Karine know if you upload work, as she doesn’t check the Facebook page as regularly. Click this link and ask to join the group!
- Class fee is good for participants living in a single household.
