How to Make Abstract Art that Works

What makes an abstract work, work? How do you start and where are you headed? These are questions we all struggle with, including Melinda, and in this class she gives us some very practical and effective tools for making great abstract work in collage. And it’s fun!

A NOTE FROM MELINDA

I want to welcome you into a deep, but compact, dive into making great abstract composition. Our tools will be simple but the results will be mighty. Since abstract, or more properly Non-Objective, art does not represent something you see out in the world, where does it come from?

It’s a very interesting process, because it is wholly made from the shapes and lines and colors, the visual elements, you are placing on the paper. Each alteration, each addition or subtraction, changes the whole thing. You may get a total mess or you may get a glorious and compelling journey for the eye to embark on. What makes the difference? It seems to follow no rules perhaps, this beautiful piece you are admiring on a gallery wall, but there are in fact number of things at work which make an abstract picture come to life for a human eye.

That is what we are here to explore. Buckle up because this is an endlessly mysterious journey. You can spend your life on this journey. But we have 6 lessons as a start. Thanks for joining me.
